- QQR Code
- Short for Quick Response code — a two-dimensional matrix barcode invented by Denso Wave in 1994 that stores data readable by a camera or dedicated scanner.
- MModule
- The individual black or white square pixel unit that makes up a QR code grid. A Version 1 QR code contains a 21×21 grid of modules.
- FFinder Pattern
- The three large square patterns located in three corners of every QR code. They allow scanners to detect position and orientation instantly regardless of angle.
- AAlignment Pattern
- Smaller square patterns embedded within larger QR codes (Version 2 and above) that help camera software correct for distortion and perspective skew.
- TTiming Pattern
- Alternating black-and-white modules that run between the finder patterns, defining the coordinate grid used to read the code's data accurately.
- QQuiet Zone
- The mandatory white border of at least four modules surrounding every QR code. Removing or cropping the quiet zone causes scan failures.
- RReed-Solomon Error Correction
- A mathematical algorithm that adds redundant data to the QR code, allowing it to be decoded even if up to 30% of the code surface is damaged or obscured.
- EError Correction Level
- The degree of damage a QR code can sustain while remaining scannable. Four levels exist: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%).
- SStatic QR Code
- A QR code that permanently encodes the destination data (e.g., a URL) into the pattern itself. The data cannot be changed once printed.
- DDynamic QR Code
- A QR code that encodes a short redirect URL. The actual destination can be updated at any time without reprinting the code. Also supports scan analytics.
- VVersion
- The size specification of a QR code, ranging from Version 1 (21×21 modules) to Version 40 (177×177 modules). Higher versions store more data but produce denser codes.
- DData Capacity
- The maximum amount of data a QR code can store, which varies by version and error correction level. A Version 40-H code holds up to 1,273 alphanumeric characters.
- EEncoding Mode
- The data type format used within a QR code: Numeric (digits only), Alphanumeric (digits + letters), Byte (binary/UTF-8), or Kanji (Japanese characters).
- SSVG Export
- Scalable Vector Graphics format — the preferred format for printing QR codes as it uses mathematical paths rather than pixels, ensuring perfect clarity at any size.
- PPNG Export
- Portable Network Graphics — a pixel-based raster format suitable for digital use such as websites, email, and social media posts, but not ideal for large-format printing.
- PPDF Export
- Portable Document Format — a print-ready format that embeds the QR code as a vector image, ideal for sharing with print shops or including in marketing documents.
- BBranded QR Code
- A QR code that incorporates a custom logo, brand colours, or unique shapes to align with a company's visual identity, increasing trust and scan rates by up to 34%.
- LLogo QR Code
- A QR code with a company or product logo placed in the centre module area. Possible because error correction (Level H) can recover that obscured section of the code.
- CColour QR Code
- A QR code using non-black/non-white colours. Requires maintaining sufficient contrast ratio (minimum 3:1) between foreground and background for reliable scanning.
- SScan Rate
- The percentage of people who scan a QR code relative to the total who see it. Branded codes consistently outperform generic ones in measured campaign data.
- SShort URL
- A compressed URL used inside dynamic QR codes as the redirect address. Keeps the QR code's data density low, resulting in simpler, easier-to-scan patterns.
- RRedirect URL
- The final destination a dynamic QR code sends the scanner to after passing through the short URL redirect server. Can be updated without changing the printed code.
- UUTM Parameters
- URL query strings appended to QR code destinations (e.g., ?utm_source=poster) to track campaign performance inside Google Analytics or any analytics platform.
- SScan Analytics
- Real-time data collected when a dynamic QR code is scanned, including total scans, unique devices, geographic location, operating system, and time of scan.
- VvCard QR Code
- A QR code encoding a vCard (Virtual Contact File) containing name, phone, email, address, and company details — enabling instant digital business card sharing.
- WWiFi QR Code
- A QR code encoding a WiFi network's SSID, password, and encryption type in a standardised format (WIFI:S:...) so scanners can join the network automatically.
- MMecard
- An alternative to vCard for encoding contact information within QR codes, originally developed by NTT Docomo. Simpler format but less widely supported than vCard.
- IISO/IEC 18004
- The international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization that defines the QR code specification, ensuring cross-device compatibility.
- DDenso Wave
- The Japanese company (a subsidiary of Toyota Group) that invented the QR code in 1994 and holds the patent, which it chose not to enforce to allow free global adoption.
- QQuishing
- QR Code Phishing — a cyberattack where malicious QR codes are used to redirect victims to fake websites designed to steal credentials or install malware.
- MMicro QR Code
- A compact variant of the QR standard with a single finder pattern, designed for applications with very limited space such as PCB components and small product labels.
- FFrame QR Code
- A QR code design where a customisable visual 'canvas' area is placed in the centre, allowing for richer image or text embedding beyond a simple logo.
- HHigh Density QR
- A QR code operating at higher version numbers or using tighter module spacing to store large amounts of data such as full vCards or event information in a single code.
- BBatch QR Generation
- The automated process of generating multiple unique QR codes simultaneously — used for product serialisation, ticketing, or large-scale direct mail campaigns.
- LLanding Page QR Code
- A QR code that links directly to a dedicated marketing landing page, optimised for a specific call-to-action such as signing up, downloading, or buying.
- AApp Store QR Code
- A QR code that links to a mobile application listing on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or both via a smart redirect service.
- EEvent QR Code
- A QR code used for event ticketing, check-in, or registration. When scanned, it validates a ticket, displays event details, or opens an RSVP form.
- MMenu QR Code
- A QR code used in hospitality settings that links to a digital menu, enabling contactless ordering and reducing the cost of printing physical menus.
- DDigital Business Card
- An electronic alternative to paper business cards, often delivered via a QR code scan, containing contact details, social links, and a professional profile.
- FForeground Colour
- The dark pattern colour in a QR code. Must maintain a high contrast ratio against the background colour for reliable scanning across all lighting conditions.
- BBackground Colour
- The light colour surrounding the dark modules in a QR code. Typically white, but any light colour can be used if contrast with the foreground is sufficient.
- DDot Style
- A design customisation option that replaces the standard square modules with rounded dots, giving the QR code a more modern and visually appealing appearance.
- EEye Shape
- The visual design of the three finder-pattern squares (eyes) of a QR code. Can be customised to rounded, circular, or other shapes to enhance brand aesthetics.
